Japan, 1752 - It was time of great disturbance in Japan. The Emperor was old and dying, Samurai were no longer a way of life, and a young man by the name of Hiro Nakamaji was struggling to support his family.
Having worked his way up through the ranks of the Emperor's court, young Hiro was thought to be a shoe-in for the position of "Emperor's Confidant," once the current Confidant died or was "asked" to "leave." However, the current Confidant, one Jisaku Birobi, had a long standing rivalry with Hiro, as Hiro was "better-looking" and more "talented." Hearing the Emperor was growing tired of his company, Jisaku devised a devious plan. One night at dinner, as the Emperor gummed wildly at his rice, Jisaku joked that Hiro should go on a Hero's Quest, since the word hero and Hiro's name were homonyms. The Emperor, being a lover of puns, decided it should be so, and promptly packed Hiro's bags for him. The Quest? To find some lychee nuts to spice the Emperor's soup. That night, Hiro said goodbye to his family, and grumbling that it would be the last time he would agree to a Quest while the Emperor was having dinner, he set off on a long and arduous journey. Little did know what he'd find on the way*... |
